What it was:
Rough overview of Suspender Summer Circus Camps
2000
1st camp...filled up real fast, had to turn a
bunch of kids away..(Sorry)..Ended up with 23 campers (more than I'd prefer...was
aiming for 21). Used long time camp regular Brayden Haas as a CIT for the
first time (he did very well).
Other councilors included Bob, Geoff, Eruch, Mark
and myself. Brett from Yomega was a huge hit as a special guest yo-yo instructor
and general all around cool guy. Was particularly happywith the show "Circus
of the
Stars!"
which is actually
far more high concept than it sounds. It's one
of the few show ideas to come out of a
Suspenders camp which I think is worth repeating
and as such I've written a script. (a copy of which is available at a small
fee as I think that it could be done by circus arts classes almost anywhere.

The 2nd camp in August was a bit smaller (13)
and as such seemed comparatively laid back and easy. It ended with Circus
Olympia, a paean to this year's games in Sydney. This is actually the second
time we've done a Circus/Olympics theme, the last being in '96 when we
actually held more of a competition than a performance. This year Circus
Olympia was definitely more cooperative than competitive with synchronized
feather balancing and the tandem uni slalom.
A nice touch was sharing the narrative role which
is usually mine with Eruch and Geoff who both shined during their moments
in the spotlight. For their efforts, the Olympians each received a boink
hammer. (Again, parents, I apologize.) Special thanks to Pam for a day
of counseling. Good to have the superior sex's point of view on things
once in a while. So there you have it. Now onto the Waldorf School of Cape
Cod for a year of in-school classes. See ya next summer!
Excelsior!
